Daily Tech Notes for September 15, 2026

Today at DTN, an incubator program in Virginia Beach lands a big catch in AI-driven maritime navigation, and Old Dominion University will lead projects that help scientists answer more complex problems with the help of AI.

The Virginia Beach International Incubator picked up a partner this week. Orca AI is a subsidiary of a London-based marine company that “develops artificial intelligence-powered technology that improves vessel navigation, helps prevent collisions and enhances situational awareness.” The company also has partnerships in Singapore and South Korea. The Virginian-Pilot broke the news.

At Old Dominion University, the university has announced that its researchers will develop AI technologies addressing two fundamental challenges: helping scientists operate complex research facilities more efficiently and ensuring they can trust the AI-supported results those facilities produce.

One project, led by Monika Yadav, Ph.D., assistant professor of physics and faculty member in the School of Data Science, will explore how AI can help scientists operate particle accelerators more efficiently.

A second Old Dominion University-led project will develop safeguards designed to detect cyberattacks, data manipulation and other problems that could undermine AI-assisted scientific research.

The nine-month feasibility study will be led by Jiang Li, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, in collaboration with Jefferson Lab.
