Scenic hikes in Virginia take on a colorful hue as fall approaches. Bright, turning leaves paired with overcast skies also make for perfect hiking conditions. 

Shenandoah National Park in Luray, Virginia, has some of the most breathtaking trails across the commonwealth. Skyline Drive features 75 scenic overlooks and serves to connect visitors to over 500 miles of trails. 

Dark Hollow Falls is among the most popular of these trails, according to the National Park Service. 

A short trek with a total circuit measuring 1.4 miles, Dark Hollow Falls is ideal for a weekend activity. Estimated hiking time is about an hour and 15 minutes and is a good trail for moderate hikers looking for a rocky roam.

Located at mile marker 50.7 along Skyline Drive, the trail has its own parking lot, however it is known to fill quickly, so it’s recommended to arrive early. 

The trail starts out smooth, but as one makes their way through the wooded shade to the falls, it becomes steeper and rockier. Hikers are reminded to be careful of footing, especially when the trail is wet. 

Approaching the ideal viewing spot requires descending a set of wood stairs that open up to a waterfall cascading over large rocks into a river. Take your time appreciating the natural water feature before returning to the parking lot via the same trek.

Pets are not permitted on this hike, so furry friends will have to sit this one out. 

Admission to Shenandoah National Park requires an admission fee. There is no additional fee for walking the trail, which is open year-round.
