Virginia gas prices have been trending slightly higher this week, showing a 4.07% increase from last week.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas as of Thursday, September 10, was $4.09. That’s up 16 cents from a week ago. For an average 14 gallon fill up, that works out to an additional $2.24.

While prices across the state are up, Virginia’s average per-gallon rate is 18 cents lower than the national average, which sits at $4.27.

Brent crude oil pricing is the primary driver of gasoline costs. The price for a barrel rose above $100 on Thursday – its highest level since May 19.

Tensions in the Middle East are pushing up prices, according to Trading Economics, as Iran threatens to continue strikes if the U.S. persists in its attacks. Further, Trading Economics reports, “Iran-backed Houthi forces are targeting Saudi assets and threatening shipping routes. Saudi Arabia’s crude oil production fell sharply in August 2026, dropping by around 1.9 million barrels a day to 6.238 million barrels a day, its lowest level since 1990.”

Diesel prices also continue to climb. According to AAA, a gallon of diesel averages $5.95 in Virginia. That’s 13 cents higher than a week ago, and about 70 cents higher than a month ago.

Diesel prices tend to spike quicker than gasoline prices for a number of reasons, among them is that diesel is a global product, whereas gasoline is principally a regional product. Also, demand for diesel is less flexible than demand for gasoline. As gas prices rise, consumers often drive less. Because diesel drives long-haul trucking, rail transport, marine shipping, and similar industries, demand doesn’t respond as quickly to higher prices.
