Today in DTN – A South Korean firm is bringing a major investment to Virginia to support the state’s data center industry. 

One Sunday, the Seoul Economic Daily announced that LG Electronics – maker of many household appliances, air conditioners, and technology sotions for electric vehicles – will be investing 500 billion won, about $360 million – to build a chiller plant in Virginia that will cool AI data centers. 

According to an industry official who spoke with Seoul Economic Daily, the company “is discussing a range of support measures with the state government, including plant site selection, investment incentives, tax benefits on equipment purchases and corporate tax cuts tied to new hiring…. Once negotiations wrap up, the company will move quickly to build the facility.” 

This will be LG’s first overseas production base in 16 years. 

The demand for chillers is growing. Seoul Economic Daily reports industry demand is expected to grow from $18 billion last year to nearly $50 billion in 2034.
