In today's DTN, a big fine for a big company.

Daily Tech Notes

In a breaking story on Wednesday afternoon, the New York Times reported that Meta was fined $25 billion (with a “B”) by a New Mexico judge for “deceiving users about its data privacy practices.”

The fine was the result of a 2021 lawsuit brought by the state of New Mexico against the company for committing “43 million violations of [the states] consumer protection laws. Each violation carried a penalty of up to $5,000.” The case was tied to Facebook working with Cambridge Analytica to share users’ information without their knowledge so that Cambridge Analytical could build voter profiles.

The penalty is on top fines of $567 million and $375 million from the same case. The company also settled with 47 states and the District of Columbia for $17.1 billion (also with a “B”) for “claims it endangered children with addictive social media platforms.”

The use of consumer protection laws is the new frontier in suing tech giants. Meta has said it will appeal the decision.
