Hunger – officially referred to as “food insecurity” – is drawing renewed attention as the so-called Big Beautiful Bill begins to take effect. Here in Virginia, participation in SNAP has fallen 15 percent over the past year according to No Child Hungry Virginia. That translates to about 117,000 individuals. 

An additional 7,000 eligible people may be affected by federal eligibility changes and federal cuts according to a new dashboard established by the state. 

Against this backdrop, Gov. Abigail Spanberger is encouraging eligible families to take part in the Sun Bucks program, which provides a one-time $120 benefit for each eligible school-aged child during summer months. 

According to a press release issued by the governor’s office, more than 628,000 children currently benefit from the program, but some 705,000 children are expected to be eligible. That’s some 70,000 children eligible for the extra support but not receiving it currently.

Virginia is one of 39 states participating in the SUN Bucks program, which can be used to buy food items at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other businesses that accept SNAP EBT benefits. The Virginia Fresh Match program doubles the value of SNAP purchases on fruits and vegetables when bought at participating farmers markets and local food retailers.

Families who believe their children may be eligible have until August 31 to apply. Information about the program and how to apply can be found at the Virginia Department of Social Services webpage.
